"Cum On Feel The Noize" was written by lead singer Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea and produced by Chas Chandler. The single was released via Polydor Record Label on 23rd February 1973.
This single reached number 1 on the U.K. chart, it was Slade's 4th number 1 single in the U.K. and their 1st to enter straight at number 1.
"Cum On Feel The Noize" was issued as a non album single.
Background
"Cum On Feel The Noize" entered at the top slot in both the U.K. and Irish charts, which was quite a rare feat at the time and was the 1st occasion this had happened since The Beatles' single 'Get Back' in 1969.
Typical of Slade's releases at the time, it fared less well in the U.S.A., where it would only peak at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song actually inspired American rock band Kiss to write their popular signature rock anthem 'Rock And Roll All Nite'.
The song has often been spelled as "Come On Feel The Noize" or "C'mon Feel The Noize", most likely due to censorship reasons.
The song highlights Noddy Holders skill as a vocalist, and the "grinding" style he adopted on some of the band's heavier numbers. Jim Leas bass playing is especially melodic here, countering the heavy guitar styles of Noddy Holder and Dave Hill.
Recording
"Cum On Feel The Noize" was released via Polydor Record Label on 23rd February 1973.
And was the band's 7th top 20 single in a row.
This was the 1st Slade track in which the band attempted to recreate and write about the atmosphere at their gigs. Originally, the song was titled "Cum On Hear The Noize" until Jim Lea suggested the change in words. Noddy Holder officially revised the title when he recalled, "how I had felt the sound of the crowd pounding in my chest". Noddy Holders 'Baby, baby, baby' introduction was actually just a microphone test.
In a early 1986 Slade fan club magazine interview, guitarist Dave Hill spoke of the song's lyrics. "The song was based around audiences and things that were happening to us. They were just experiences. Obviously, when you are on the road, you are writing about being on the road, you're writing about what's going on."
Release
"Cum On Feel The Noize" was originally released on 7" vinyl.
Upon release, the single sold 500,000 copies in only 3 weeks of release. As a result, the pressing factory were completely out of stock for a few days.
The song was later certified Gold by the BPI, based on U.K. sales.
Promotion
The song was performed on numerous U.K. and European TV shows upon release whilst the band's live performances were also a form of promotion.
The song was performed on U.K. show Top of the Pops as well as an unknown French TV show.
In 1977, the band performed the song on East German TV where the group also mimed several other previous hits, as well as each member being interviewed.
A music video was created by Caravelle. It was recorded at the band's live show in The Hague, Holland, in a similar fashion to the live video of 'Gudbuy T' Jane'.
